About Làmhan

Làmhan is a social enterprise and registered charity based in Callander, Perthshire.

We are dedicated to celebrating, preserving, and revitalising Scottish heritage crafts and textiles, while also promoting Gaelic language and culture through tuition, events, and community engagement.

Our work supports traditional skills, local makers, and sustainable practices that strengthen rural communities and celebrate Scotland’s cultural and linguistic heritage. Through education, enterprise, and creativity, Làmhan connects people with craft, culture, and place.

The Opportunity

We are seeking two to three new Board Members to join our small, committed Board and help guide Làmhan through an exciting phase of growth and development.

We are particularly looking for individuals with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Finance / accounting / charity financial management
  • Funding, fundraising, or grant development
  • Legal / governance / compliance

Previous experience on a charity or social enterprise board would be highly valued, though not essential for the right candidate.

You will bring professional expertise, sound judgement, and enthusiasm for community-led enterprise.

We especially welcome applicants who have:

  • An interest in Scottish heritage crafts and textiles
  • A connection to or appreciation of Gaelic language and culture
  • An understanding of the challenges and opportunities for rural communities
  • Awareness of or passion for environmental sustainability and circular economy principles

What’s Involved

Board members attend around four online meetings per year, with an annual in-person meeting or planning session in Callander. You may also contribute to sub-groups or advisory work between meetings. A full induction and ongoing support are provided.

Job Title: Kiltmaker Tutor (Part-Time)

Location: Callander, Perthshire, and possibly another Central Scotland location

Start date: March 2026

Working pattern: 1–2 days per week

Pay: £359.20 per day (Scottish Artists Union day rate)

Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced Kiltmaker Tutor to deliver high-quality, specialist instruction in the craft of kiltmaking. The successful candidate will teach adult learners in small groups, sharing professional methods, traditional techniques, and industry standards. This role is suited to a practising kiltmaker who is passionate about their craft and committed to passing on skills in a supportive and structured learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

The postholder will deliver practical, hands-on teaching in professional kiltmaking techniques and demonstrate accurate measuring, cutting, pleating, setting and finishing. They will teach hand-finishing methods and quality standards, provide clear demonstrations and individual support, and give constructive feedback to encourage learner progress. They will maintain a safe, organised and professional teaching environment, advise learners on appropriate tools and materials, and promote good workshop discipline and safe working practices. The role includes contributing to planning and course development, working collaboratively with Làmhan staff and visiting tutors, and representing the organisation professionally.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years’ professional experience as a kiltmaker and be able to demonstrate high-quality traditionally constructed work. They must be confident teaching adult beginners, communicate clearly and supportively, and be well organised and reliable. Willingness to travel to Callander and an additional Central Scotland location if required is essential.
  • Teaching Qualification (desirable, not essential)
  • Applicants may hold an adult teaching qualification or be willing to work towards one.
  • Applicants must show awareness of PTSD and trauma-informed practice, be able to work sensitively with adult learners, and be willing to undertake safeguarding and trauma-awareness training if required.

Desirable

Previous teaching or mentoring experience, experience in adult or community education, and an understanding of learner wellbeing and support needs are desirable.

Pay & Contract

The role is paid at the Scottish Artists Union day rate (currently £359.20) and is offered on a part-time, sessional or freelance basis. Teaching days will be agreed in advance.
